How To Fix Your Disposal

This is a fairly common problem. Most homeowners either have or will face this at some point. This is a good video of how to fix the problem yourself. One thing I would add to his remedies is that most disposals come with a disposal wrench which looks like a big allen wrench (5 sided shaft with a 90 degree bend) and this can be inserted in the center at the bottom (from underneath) of many disposals to manually turn the disposal and free it. Of course, make sure the switch is off when you do this. If you see one of these wrenches laying in the bottom of your base cabinet, that’s what it’s for.

Ghost Flushing Toilet

Ok so it’s not really a ghost flushing your toilet. Well, maybe in some cases it is but more than likely it’s the flapper. Here’s a good illustration of how to fix that.

How To Fix A Noisy Toilet

This is a pretty common problem. Phantom water noises in the toilet usually heard in the middle of the night (because it’s quiet). Most of the time this is caused by a worn out flapper which is real easy to replace but sometimes it is the rim on the flush valve. In the case of the rim on the flush valve being worn, you would need to replace the whole flush valve as he has done in the video. But I would start by just replacing the flapper. In my experience that does the trick most of the time. Either way it’s a pretty easy fix.

The No-Wax Toilet Seal

In a previous post I talked about an option when installing your new toilet of using a no-wax option for the floor seal as opposed to a wax ring. This is one of those products and the one I frequently use. I have changed enough wax rings to know that they do need to be replaced from time to time. Things like plunging the toilet or sewer line back up can blow out a normal wax ring and cause it to leak. This requires pulling the toilet up just to replace the wax ring. So it’s not something most people want to do. So here’s your best chance of avoiding that. I’ve been using these no-wax seals for years and I definitely recommend using them.

Choosing The Right Toilet

Yesterday I posted about installing a new toilet. And I told you there were options to consider when selecting your new toilet. Today we’re going to look at what those options are. This great video explains how, at least with this big box store, to use the information in the store when making your selection. If you know where and what to look for it can really make your task of finding a new toilet much easier.
